4. Complete worksheets answering literal, interpretive, and critical questions from this novel.
5. Come to an understanding of what magic has to do with the novel.
6. Understand the importance of positive thinking.
7. Understand the difference between what is real and what is an illusion.
8. Understand that taking care of one's self is essential to having a happy life.
9. Share with the class the goal they have worked on to raise their self-esteem.
10. Enter relevant information into their notebooks.
11. Continue writing in journals.
12. Continue monitoring their experiments

Procedures:
  1. Students will be assigned one chapter each night to read.
  2. Vocabulary for chapters 21-27 will be given and discussed before each chapter is assigned.   Keywords
  3. Students will be given a quiz after each chapter to make sure they understand what they have read.  Quiz21, Quiz22,
      Quiz23, Quiz24, Quiz25, Quiz26,
  4. Students will be given a worksheet telling what they think each of the characters might be when they grow up.  This
      worksheet will be taken from Lift by Sundance.    Worksheet5
  5. Students will discuss the importance of positive thinking for themselves and for the characters in The Secret Garden.
  6. Students will be presented a magic show and will then discuss the difference between what is real and what is an illusion.
  7. Students will discuss the events in the story that were supposedly caused by magic.
  8. Students will discuss the importance self-esteem plays in being successful.
  9. Students will volunteer to discuss what they have done to raise their self-esteem.
10. Students will enter relevant information into their notebooks.
11. Students will write a journal entry describing how positive thinking helped the characters in The Secret Garden and tell
      how it once made a difference in their own lives.
12. Students will continue to monitor their two plants and note any difference between the two.  They should then try to
      rationalize reasons why the differences occur

Modifications:

1. Teachers should modify the lesson as necessary to meet the students IEP requirements.
2. Cassette tapes of the novel should be made available to students who have difficulty reading.
3. Peer tutoring should be made available to students who have difficulty reading.
4. Teachers should determine the needs for student assistance based on Inclusion and request a special education teacher
    when needed.

Enrichment Activities:

1. Students will continue to work on powerpoint presentations to be presented at the conclusion of this unit
2. Students may use on scene from The Secret Garden and present it as a play.  They should add sound effects to make it
    interesting for the class.
