Title:                    Unlocking The Secrets of "The Secret Garden"

    Description:            The purpose of this unit is to introduce the students to novel reading as well
                                   as to explore the two countries of India and England.  This unit will be used
                                   in conjunction with a 2nd unit (Around the World with The Secret Garden)
                                   It provides motivating and meaningful thinking activities that prompt students to
                                   think critically about the issues of literature.  Students are motivated to stretch
                                   their reading skills and to wrap their thinking around a task, finding ways to
                                   apply what they have learned to their own life. Whole ideas are explored in
                                   activities involving different subject areas.  These send students investigating
                                   individually, in pairs, in small groups, and as a class.

    Learner Outcomes:    The student will:
 

• Be given an overall look at the novel The Secret Garden through a PowerPoint presentation pointing out the highlights of the book
• Define key vocabulary terms and be able to use each in a context sentence.
• Be exposed to the Yorkshire dialect that is used throughout the novel by watching the movie, All Creatures Great and Small.
• Read the novel The Secret Garden
• Be given background information on the author, Frances Hodgson Burnett
• Design a notebook in which all relevant information is entered from day to day
• Write a paper describing and illustrating in detail their idea of a perfect "secret place"
• Take comprehension tests after reading each chapter to ensure their understanding of the novel.
• Complete worksheets to help them understand the novel up to that point
• Complete a science experiment that will help convey the importance of nurturing a living thing.
• Predict outcomes of the story as the novel unfolds.
• Understand the changes that a character goes through during the course of a novel.
• Complete journal writing activities.

Duration of Unit:    9 week period using 60 minute periods each day
