Description:
This unit is
a compact study of coal that can be easily adapted to any grade level.
The unit encompasses the following topics of study: coal formation, types
of coal, types of mining, terminology associated with coal and coal mining,
the coal miner, and the history of coal. Students will learn more about
their heritage and the influences of coal upon their everyday lives.

Learner Outcomes:
Students will demonstrate an understanding
of the formation of coal, identify and recognize types of coal, develop
an awareness of the coal industry and the terminology associated with the
coal industry.
Duration of Lesson:
Ten 45 minute class periods, plus
a day for the field trip.
