WHAT IS SMOKING?

Grade Level: 6

Learner Outcomes:

Students will be able to define
smoking, nicotine, and tobacco.

Students will be able to describe
a tobacco plant.

Students will be aware of the
growing, harvesting, curing, and aging process of tobacco.

Students will make a collage of
the different
types of tobacco products and list how each product is prepared.
Duration of Lesson: Two
to four class periods (50 minutes each)
Materials:

magazines

pictures of tobacco products

Video on smoking

Computer with internet access

Electronic encyclopedias

Teacher's Notes:

Collect magazines prior to class

Students will work in groups when
making collage

Remind students to be looking
for pictures of tobacco products at home

Preview the video ordered from
the CDC. (This video is free and
can be ordered at: CDC's Office on Smoking and Health;
Mail Stop K-50; 4770 Buford Highway, NE; Atlanta, GA 30341-3717)

Make sure we have all necessary
equipment ready before class begins.

Make sure all materials are gathered.
Procedures:

Brainstorm possible answers to
questions about smoking before viewing video.

View video.
-
Class or small group discussion.

Take students to computer lab
and access internet and Encarta encyclopedia.

Students will define smoking,
tobacco, and nicotine in their health journals.
-
Students will write a brief description
of a tobacco plant. They may draw one if they wish.
-
Students will list the steps in
growing, harvesting, curing, and aging tobacco.
-
Break into small groups of 4-5
students.
-
Create collage.
-
List the different types of tobacco
products and tell how each type is prepared.
Modifications:

Make necessary adjustments for
students with special needs according to their IEP.

The collage can be used for an
enrichment activity.
