MYTHS OR FACTS

Grade Level:  6

Subject:  Health, Science, Language Arts

Learner Outcomes: 

  • Students will become familiar with the different myths about smoking.
  • Students will be able to identify facts about smoking.
  • Students will use resources to compile a list of facts.
  • Students will be able to analyze, classify, and evaluate the myths from the facts.
  • Students will be able to chart facts from gathered information.
Duration of Lesson:  2-4 class periods (50 minutes each)

Materials:

  • lesson plans
  • handout on Smoking Myths
  • fifteen minute video about smoking myths (free)
  • free posters
  • poster paper
  • markers
  • journals
Technology Tools/Courseware:  Teacher Notes:
  • Order video and free posters from CDC in advance.
  • Preview video.
  • Make sure all materials are gathered and made ready before class begins.
  • Monitor and supervise student use of Internet at all times.
  • Bookmark different sites for students to access.
  • Make signs from the Health Fact Sheet For Educators and have them displayed throughout the room.
  • Make slide presentation from powerpoints.
  • For powerpoints, go to slide/notes and choose set D-Just For Girls.
  • Divide class into 2 groups.
Procedures: 
  • Introduce lesson with questions--"Fact or Myth".......?
  • Go over facts from signs posted around the room.
  • Watch fifteen minute video.
  • Class discussion.
  • Go to lab and access information on Internet.
  • Have one group find facts and the other find myths.
  • Make a list of each in journals.
  • Return to class and watch slide show on facts and myths.
  • Pair a fact student with a myth student and chart information as what is fact and what is myth.
  • Give out free posters and Health Fact Sheets For Students.
Modifications:
  • Make necessary adjustments for students with special needs according to their IEP.
Enrichment Activities: 
  • Posters will be displayed.
Evaluation/Assessment:
  • By observation while on the computer.
  • By participation in class discussion.
  • Quiz-List five myths and the facts to refute them.
