Grade Level:  6

Learner Outcomes:

  • Students will be able to define cardiovascular disease.
  • Students will be aware that CVD is the leading cause of death in America.
  • Students will recognize that tobacco affects all areas of the CVD system and not just the heart.
  • Students will understand secondhand smoke is a contributing factor in CVD disease.
  • Students will develop a better awareness that smoking can lead to premature deaths.
  • Students will view cardiovascular system and model of pumping heart.
Duration of Lesson:  2 class periods (50 minutes each) 

Materials 

  • poster paper
  • colored pencils
  • markers
  • journals
Technology Tools/Courseware:  Teacher Notes:
  • Make sure all materials are gathered and ready before class begins.
  • Have computer lab ready. 
  • Students can enter poster contest if they desire.
  • Click on contest site for information about poster and/or poetry contest.
  • Get permission from principals of both schools and science teacher.
Procedures: Modifications:
  • Make necessary adjustments for students with special needs according to their IEP.
Enrichment Activities: 
  • Can use the poem and/or poster as enrichment.
Evaluation/Assessment:
  • Teacher observation of computer lab.
  • Check journal.
  • Define CVD.
