DURATION OF LESSON: 5 (45) minute periods
- Be given a PowerPoint presentation highlighting the countries of India and England
- Be involved in a brief discussion of the first two chapters of The Secret Garden
- Research selected websites looking for information to compare/contrast the countries of India and England (culture, time zones, landforms, customs, language, climate, capital cities, major cities, major waterways, currency, current time, time zones and vegetation
- Research the school library using atlases, globes, encyclopedias, etc.
- Keep a journal recording all of the information they find on the websites
MATERIALS: Materials needed to complete this lesson are as follows:
TECHNOLOGY TOOLS: Technology needed to complete this lesson
- 5th or 6th grade social studies book
- World/Country maps of India and England
- Atlas/Globes
- Encyclopedias
- Journals
- Copies of the novel The Secret Garden
TEACHER NOTES:
- Projector for PowerPoint presentation
- Computer and printer with internet (Internet) access
PROCEDURES:
- Teacher should explain to the students that this unit is being done in conjunction with the novel, The Secret Garden that they are presently reading in Language Arts.
- The Language Arts teacher and social studies teacher must confer daily in order for these units to work.
- Students should be made aware of the fact that they must carefully enter all relevant information into their journals.
- Arrangements should be made with the school librarian in advance so that the students may have some time in the library.
MODIFICATIONS:
- Students will be given a brief PowerPoint presentation highlighting the countries of India and England. indiaengland
- Students will discuss the first two chapters of The Secret Garden paying special attention to the language and customs of India.
- Students will be given a list of topics that they will be researching in the computer lab. These topics are (culture, time zones, landforms, customs, language, climate, capital cities, major cities, major waterways, currency, current time, time zones and vegetation)
- Students will be given a list of internet sites that will be bookmarked for them. ( World Atlas) (Virtualtourist) ( Countries ) ( virtualtourofindia ) (virtuallondon) (destinationengland)
- Students will do research in the library under the guidance of the teacher and the librarian.
ENRICHMENT:
- Teachers should modify the lesson as necessary to meet the students' IEP requirements.
- Students who need extra help should be paired in groups with students who are able to help them.
- Teachers should determine the needs for student assistance based on Inclusion and request a special education teacher when needed.
- Teachers should use peer tutuoring whenever necessary.
EVALUATION/ASSESSMENT:
- Students may read another novel with a setting of either India or England.
- Students will be evaluated on how well they work in the computer lab.
- Students will be evaluated on how well they work in the library.
- Journals will be evaluated.
