• Students will gather information about current events in India and England.
• Students will be made aware of the history and the meaning of the symbols on the U.S. flag.
• Students will research the flags of India and England.
• Students will compose a paper on the history of the flags and the meanings of the symbols that are on the flags.
• Students will construct a detailed model of the flags of the two countries.
• Students will calculate the distance between the two countries using a scale map.
• Students will become familiar with using a compass.
• Students will construct a map with compass directions leading from the entrance of Misselthwaite Manor to the secret garden.

MATERIALS:

• Worksheets to design flags
• Scale map
• Crayons, markers, colored pencils

• Computers with internet connection

• The teacher needs to consult with the Language Arts teacher about the writing assignment on the flags.
• Make sure slower students are paired with someone so they will be able to complete this assignment.
• Intenet sites should be bookmarked.

• Students will be told to gather information in newspapers, magazines, newsreports, etc. about India and England.
• Students will be shown an American flag and be led in a discussion on the history of the flag and the meaning of the symbols on the flag.

• Students will use the information they have gathered to write a report on the history of the two flags, paying special attention to the meaning of the symbols on the flag.

• Students will calculate the distance between India and England using a scale map. (scale)

• Teachers should modify the lesson as necessary to meet the students' IEP requirements.
• Students who need extra help should be paired in groups with students who are able to help them.
• Teachers should determine the needs for student assistance based on Inclusion and request a special education teacher when needed.
• Teachers should use peer tutoring whenever necessary.

• Students may make a video promoting tourism in Indian or England.

• Students will be evaluated on their flags.
