Lesson 4
TITLE: In the Garden
GRADE LEVEL: 6

LEARNER OUTCOMES: The Student will:

Be shown videos from the Gardens of the World Series

Research famous gardens of the world.
-
List top ten favorite gardens from around the world.
-
Show pictures of their gardens and tell why these are their favorites.

Discuss what would be involved in designing a garden.
-
Be shown how to construct a scale drawing.
-
Complete a worksheet on what they would need to design their "perfect"
garden.
-
Design a garden for themselves using geometric shapes.
DURATION OF LESSON: 5 (45) minute periods
MATERIALS: Materials needed to complete the activity are
as follows:

Garden videos may be purchased from the website http://video4you.com/videos2/gardenin.htm

Some students may need to be paired with another student in order to complete
their scale drawings.
PROCEDURES:
-
The teacher will show two videos to the students: Gardens of the
World Series: Flower Garden, and Flowers of the World Series:
Formal Gardens.

Students will research famous gardens of the world from selected websites.(garden1),
(garden2), (garden3),
(garden4), (garden5),
(garden6),
(garden7), (garden8)
-
Students will make a list of their top ten favorite gardens and tell why
they prefer these gardens.
-
Students will share with the class pictures of their favorite gardens.
-
Teacher will have a discussion on what it would involve to design a formal
garden (amount of land needed, types of flowers, costs, materials, time
involved, etc.)
-
Students will complete a worksheet on what they would need to design their
"perfect" garden. (gardenquestions)

Students will be given a lesson on how to construct a scale drawing.

Students will design their own formal garden using worksheets and selected
geometic shapes. (gardenmath)
MODIFICATIONS:
-
Teachers should modify the lesson as necessary to meet the students' IEP
requirements.

Students who need extra help should be paired in groups with students who
are able to help them.

Teachers should determine the needs for students assistance based on Inclusion
and request a special education teacher when necessary.
ENRICHMENT: Students may actually built a scale of their garden.
