Title:  The Battle

Learner Outcomes:
   The students will:
  1. Examine key people and events of the Battle of Gettysburg and determine the importance of the outcome.
  2. Use the Internet to locate resources related to the Battle of Gettysburg and incorporate information from these resources into their own writing.
  3. Develop a clear, focused composition that addresses the assigned topic and which is supported by relevant details.
Duration of Lesson:  7-8  (Fifty Minute Class Periods)

Materials:  Pencil/Pen, and Paper

Technology Tools/Courseware:  VCR, Video "Gettysburg",  Internet, Electronic Encyclopedias

Procedures:
  1. To serve as a unit introduction and to provide background information, teacher will show the movie "Gettysburg" and then lead a daily class discussion of the event.
  2. Using Internet Explorer, students will research the Battle of Gettysburg by visiting multiple Internet sites, reading about the battle, and making a list of important facts and key individuals of the battle.
  3. Students will take a virtual tour of the battlefield by visiting The Gettysburg Battle Tour.
  4. Students will write a two-page essay on elements of the battle and the impact of the outcome.
Modifications:  Modifications will be made based on those listed in student's IEP.

Enrichment Activities:  Students will construct a time line of the major events of the Battle of Gettysburg.

Evaluation/Assessment:  Oral Discussion, Fact List, and Completed Essay.
