Teacher Notes:
- This lesson is designed for use with a T-View.
- A large class-size KWL chart is needed.
Day 1: Introduce the book Johnny Tremain by using a T-View to find background information on the book. Have students complete a KWL chart as a class. Have each student make individual KWL charts to be placed in the journals they create on Day 3. Leave the large chart on display in the room while reading the book.
Day 2: Introduce Esther Forbes by having the students meet the author and write a short biographical sketch of her life and works. This sketch should also be placed in the student journals on Day 3.
Day 3:
Make journals for Johnny Tremain:
1. Use 1 sheet for each chapter. Label each chapter by number.
2. Use oaktag and design a book cover. Use a second sheet of
oaktag for a back cover.
3. Organize all chapter pages chronologically. Add the KWL
and biographical sketch as the first 2 pages.
4. Add the front and back covers.
5. Bind with a book binder (or staple).

Peer grouping
IEP specifications will be followed.
Assessment:
Completion of KWL charts.
Completion of biographical sketches.
Completion of journals with all components included.
