Grade Level: 7

Subjects:  Language Arts
                 Art

Learner Outcomes:
                               The students will:
                                1.  Draw pictures each character in the book.
                                2.  Write a short character description for each.
                                3.  Match character pictures/names to description.

Duration: 2-3  45 minute class periods

Materials:  flashcards
                   colored pencils
                   pencils

Technology Tools:  Computer with Internet access

Teacher Notes:

  • Each student will need 1 flashcard for each character in the book (approximately 25).

Procedure:

Days 1-3:  There are many characters in Johnny Tremain.  The following activity can be used as a character study lesson.
                  1.  Have the students list all of the characters in the book.
                  2.  Using flashcards,  the students can create a trading card game by drawing each character's face and
name on the front.  On the back of each card, write character information about each.  They may need to
make up some information, such as Dove's birthdate.
                  3.  The students can then pair up and quiz each other on character information.  They may play for points,
cards, or use a game board.
                  4.  As a variation, the students can make a matching/concentration game.  They can do this by putting the
name/picture on 1 card and the character information on another.  They can then use these to play a game
that involves matching the picture/name card to the character information card.

Modifications:  IEP specifications will be followed.
Students with limited writing ability may be paired with another student in order to create a set of
cards for each with 1 student doing all of the writing and the other doing all of the drawing for both sets.

Enrichment:  Have students use a word processing and clip art program to create computer generated flashcards with
                     a more polished look.

Assessment:  Completion of flashcards--one for each character.
