Title:  Johnny Tremain Mural

Grade Level:  7

Subjects:  Language Arts
                  Art

Learner Outcomes:

Duration:  3-4  45 minute class periods.

Materials:  freezer paper/bulletin board paper
                    markers
                   colored pencils
 

Technology Tools:  Computer with Internet access
 

Procedure:

Days 1-4:  1.  Divide the students into 12 groups (1 for each chapter).  Assign each group a chapter.
                    2.  Using freezer paper or bulletin board paper, the students will create large murals depicting the events
                       of each chapter of Johnny Tremain
                  3.  Once each mural is complete, the students will write a brief synopsis of the important events depicted. 
                  4.  Display the murals in the classroom or hallway.

Modifications:  IEP specifications will be followed.

Enrichment: Develop a TV program using the same basic technique.  Make the murals in a smaller version 
                    (approximately  18 X 24 inches).  Connect the murals together into 1 long, continuous sequence.  Use a large
                     box with a screen cut out of the front.  Wrap the mural around 2 dowel rods and feed it through the box 
                     to display the story on the screen of the TV.

Assessment:  Students will be graded on completion of murals along with accuracy of the written synopsis.
                       Students will also be graded on cooperation in the group work.
