Lesson 2

Title:  Reading Molly's Pilgrim

Grade Level:  3

Subject:  Language Arts

Learner Outcomes:
    1.  The learner will use a dictionary and concept definition mapping to discover appropriate definitions for the teaher chosen vocabulary or use another strategy in which you feel comfortable teaching vocabulary.

     2.  The learner will read, discuss, and answer basic how and why questions.  You may wish to have your students read the text in a variety of ways that may or may not be included below in the procedures. 

     3.  The learner will answer questions orally and/or in written form as the teacher prefers.

Duration of Lesson:  50 minutes daily for approximately 4 days

Materials:  multiple copies of Molly's Pilgrim (one per student), Reading Notebooks, dictionaries, vocabulary list for each chapter placed on transparency film (specific vocabulary lists are not given due to different developmental levels, please review selection to determine vocabulary for your specific class)

Technology Tools/Courseware:  Multimedia computer, internet access, overhead projector

Procedures:
    1.  Develop a vocabulary list.  Using prepared transparency, introduce vocabulary.  The students will record vocabulary words in their Reading Notebook, then locate  the word in dictionaries (complete as a whole class, with teacher leading), and complete concept definition mapping for each word.  Place completed concept definition mapping in Reading Notebook.

    2.  After introducing the vocabulary, read the story.  During and after the reading, ask questions relating to the chapter verbally.   Ideas for reading:  Whole group reading ("Round Robin"), Radio Reading (students read into a "microphone" after the teacher has selected a particular section to be read and the student has time to practice), partner reading (pair students with a student with the same ability), paired reading/tutoring (pair students higher with a lower), or taped recordings (the student listens to a recording of the text).

    3.  You may wish to have the children answer questions that concentrate on a particular objective you are currently working on or for portfolio purposes.

Modifications:  Use peer tutors, Title I Reading Specialist (when available), and Special Educators (where applicable) as necessary. 

Enrichment Activities:  
    1.  Create a timeline for the sequence of events as the book is read, or as a review activity at the conclusion of the book.
    2.  Research Russia's traditional clothing.
    3.  Write a new ending to the story.
    4.  Make a doll using a toilet tissue tube and paper mache.
    5.  Create a Readers Theater

Evaluation/Assessment:
    1.  Student participation.
    2.  Completion of assigned activities.
    3.  Teacher observation.
