Title:  Sweet Clara and the Freedom Quilt

Grade Level:  4th-5th

Subjects:  Language Arts, Social Studies

Learner Outcomes:
    The students will be able to correctly answer comprehension questions on the book.
    The students will write a paragraph using descriptive language.

Materials:
   Sweet Clara and the Freedom Quilt by Deborah Hopkinson
   Discussion Questions

Duration:   1 fifty minute class

Technology Tools/Courseware:  Microsoft Word or other word processing software

Teacher Notes:
        Seat students in circle for discussion.

Procedures:
        1.   Read aloud to students Sweet Clara and the Freedom Quilt.
        2.   Conduct a group discussion of the book main theme using the seminar questions.
        3.   Review with students that Clara's quilt took her to the Ohio River.  Then have the
              students write a paragraph to finish the story by having Clara and Jack make it to
             Canada.  The paragraph should describe how Clara and Jack satisfied their needs on
             the way, obstacles they encountered, and their feelings once arriving in Canada.
        4.   Allow students to share their paragraphs.

Modifications:
        1.   Check to ensure all IEP modifications are being met.
        2.   Write paragraph as a whole class.

        1.   Observation of group discussion
        2.   Rubric to evaluate paragraph
