Duration of Lesson: Two
30-minute lessons
Materials:
Map and/or globe, clocks, construction paper, a blank copy of a map of
the world for each child, paper plates, clock hands (made from construction
paper), paper fasteners, markers, individual student clocks, a class-size
clock and crayons
Technology Tools/Courseware:
PowerPoint presentation, multimedia
computer
Teacher Notes:
Make up directional word cards before lesson on construction paper.
Procedures:
Day 1:

Introduce the directional words
south, north, east, and west to students by writing them on
the chalkboard.

Illustrate directional words
using "Which Way Do I Go?" PowerPoint presentation.

Take the globe and place the
pre-made construction paper directional words in the correct positions.
-
Next, take a classroom-size
clock and show different hour-hand positions on the clock.
-
Show a northerly direction on
a clock by placing the clock hands in the 12:00 position.
-
Show a southerly direction on
a clock by placing the clock hands in the 3:00 position.
-
Show an easterly direction on
a clock by placing the clock hands in the 6:00 position.

Show a westerly direction by
placing the clock hands in the 9:00 position.
Day 2:
-
Students will take a paper plate
to use as the face of a clock, construction paper to make hour-hands for
the clock (go to clock hands), markers to
write the numbers for the clock, crayons to write the direction words in
the correct positions
Modifications:
Pair children with a student-partner or aide while they work to let them
use a model as a guide.
Enrichment Activity:
Label the map of where Christopher Columbus began his journey to the "new
world."
Evaluation Assessment:
Students take a blank picture of a map that has been duplicated for
them and write the directional words in the correct positions.
