Title:  Voyage to the New World 

Grade Level:  5-6

Each student will learn:

Duration of Lesson:  Approximately 300 minutes (5 days of 60 minutes)

Materials:  Reference materials, such as Discoverers of the New World, Encarta, paper, pencils, computer printer paper

Technology Tools/Courseware:   Internet, CD-ROM, Encarta, PowerPoint, computers, printers

Procedures:
Day 1—Read aloud from Discoverers of the New World “The Sea of Darkness,” pp. 18-33.  Students will take notes of events they deem important.  The students will prepare questions about the information presented.

Day 2—The students will discuss the questions they wrote on Day 1.  They will discuss what other information they would like to learn about Christopher Columbus and his voyage to the New World.  The students will be given information about conducting a search on the Internet.  The students will search selected sites on the Internet, gather information, and write a list of the Web sites from which they have gathered the information.

Day 3—The students will pool the information they have gathered.  They will share interesting facts and Web sites with others.  The students will prepare new questions for the test on Day 5.

Day 4—The students will discuss the questions prepared from Day 3 and we will vote for the “Best Web Site.”

Day 5—After a final review, the students will take a test on Christopher Columbus from the material they have discovered on the Internet.

Modifications:
Any student who has problems with this assignment will be assigned a partner or study buddy.  This partner can help with finding information or in the preparation of the test questions.

Evaluation/Assessment:
The students will be given a test that will be compiled from questions the students made.  The test will consist of 25 questions, worth four points each, and the grade will be assessed to each student.  Students who receive a failing grade will be retested at a later date after another review of the lesson.
