Procedures:

Pre-seminar activities:
     Ask students to bring in any family quilts that may have been passed down through generations. Introduce the word "traditions" and ask students to describe some of their families' traditions.

    1.  The teacher will read the book or students will read and become familar with the book.
    2.  Paideia Seminar Rules will be discussed and understood.
    3.  Participants (12-25) sit in a circle.
    4.  Students read  the book.
    5.  The  seminar begins with opening question, core question, closing question. * Refer to guided questions.

Modifications:

Enrichment Activities:

        1.  Students will draw their own quilt and write an accompanying story.
        2.  Students will use a Venn diagram to compare The Rag Coat and the song "Coat of Many Colors" by Dolly Parton.

Evaluation/Assessment:

        1.  Students will refer to the text to support their points.
        2.  Students ask good questions, may change their minds, back up their statements with examples and reasons from the text..
        3.  After the seminar, students will continue to discuss ideas generated by The Rag Coat.
