Learner Outcomes:

•         Students will read the novel, The Rag Coat.
•         Students will increase their understanding of ideas and issues.
•         Students will develop higher order thinking skills.
•         Students will be actively involved in their own learning.
•         Students will speak more articulately.
•         Students will be exposed to quality literature.

Materials:

• The Rag Coat.
• Seminar Questions and Seminar Rules are posted.

Teacher Notes:

•  Students will have signed an Acceptable Use Policy Statement.
•  Optional:  Teacher may make Seminar Rules into an overhead transparency or a power point to project as the rules are  gone over.
• Lesson may be modified for one grade level above and one grade level below 7th grade.

    1.  The teacher will read the book or students will read and become familar with the book.
    2.  Paideia Seminar Rules will be discussed and understood.
    3.  Participants (12-25) sit in a circle.
    4.  Students read  the book.
    5.  The  seminar begins with opening question, core question, closing question. * Refer to guided questions.

Modifications:

•         Special needs students will form a smaller group with facilator reading the book.
•         Student's lessons will be modified according to IEP specifications.

        1.  Students will draw their own quilt and write an accompanying story.
        2.  Students will use a Venn diagram to compare The Rag Coat and the song "Coat of Many Colors" by Dolly Parton.

Evaluation/Assessment:

        1.  Students will refer to the text to support their points.
        2.  Students ask good questions, may change their minds, back up their statements with examples and reasons from the text..
        3.  After the seminar, students will continue to discuss ideas generated by The Rag Coat.
