Learner Outcomes:

• The students will recite the different types of poetry.

Duration of Lesson:    Two to three 45-minute blocks

Materials:

        Suggested list of poetry books
        Worksheet - "A Picnic of Poets"
        Worksheet - "Fill-in-the-Blank"

Technology Tools/Courseware:

• Computer with internet access
• Printer
• Projection Device
• Signed acceptable user policy for each child

Teacher Notes:

• The teacher needs to gather the necessary poetry books from the listed materials.
• The teacher will monitor students as they are searching for sites on the internet.
• The teacher needs to prepare "A Picnic of Poets" worksheet for each student.

Procedures:

• The teacher will read the different kinds of poems to the students to incorporate integrated subjects.
• The teacher will conduct directed discussion on interpretations of poems.  (Suggestions:  Does it rhyme?  Is there a pattern?  Is it funny, serious, etc.?)
• The teacher will conduct directed discussion to compare and contrast poet and poetry styles.  (Suggestions:  Was there imagery?  Was there realism?  Was there a central theme?)
• The teacher will utilize the Fill-in-the-Blank worksheet, involving the whole group to familiarize them with the different types of poetry.  The teacher will choose an example and the children will participate orally to complete the poem.
• The teacher will access a site on the internet, projecting an author's actual works.  Whole group discussion will follow, reading and interpreting the poetry.
• Students will  complete "A Picnic of Poets" worksheet.

Modifications:

• If the internet is not accessible, the students would need to use the library.
• The worksheet could be broken down into 4 authors per 5 groups to speed up the process or to accommodate special needs students, thus promoting cooperative learning.

Enrichment Activities:

        Students could research independently on the internet or library
        for additional poets or poetry.

Evaluation/Assessment:

        Oral discussion
        Completed worksheet
