Duration of Lesson:

Tongue depressors, paint, glue,

Teacher Notes:
-
The teacher will prepare student
packets.
-
The teacher will collect poetry
and reference books.
-
The teacher will choose the introductory
game to review the poetry types.
-
If a digital camera isn't available,
the teacher will make assignments for the students to obtain individual
photographs.

The teacher will gather various
nature recordings/CDs.
Procedures:
-
The teacher will play a game using
the worksheet from Lesson 2 for a review of the different types of poetry.
(Example: Bingo, Concentration)

DAY 1: Give
the students their poetry packets. Review cinquain
examples from the packet and/or teacher examples from poetry books.
Challenge each child to write his own poem following the cinquain format,
incorporating an individual photograph for the topic "Me" to enhance self-concepts.
Store the poem in the student packet and collect.

DAY 2: Give
the students their poetry packets. Review Name/Poetry
examples from the packet and/or teacher examples from the poetry books.
Challenge each child to write his own poem following the name-poetry formatting,
incorporating the student's name. Decorate their page to illustrate
their characteristics. Collect and store the poetry packets.

DAY 3: Give
students their poetry packets. Review haiku
examples from the packet and/or teacher examples from the poetry books.
Challenge each child to write his own poem following the haiku poetry format,
incorporating the nature theme while listening to nature recordings.
Create Haiku Hang-up to illustrate
their haiku. Collect and store the poetry packets.

DAY 4: Give
students their poetry packets. Review the limerick
examples from the student packet and/or teacher examples from the poetry
books. Challenge each child to write his own limerick following the
limerick format incorporating a social studies theme. Draw a picture
illustrating the limerick. Collect and store the poetry packets.

DAY 5: Give
students their poetry packets. Review the phrase
(preposition) examples from the packet and/or teacher examples from
the poetry book. Challenge each child to write his own phrase poetry.
Utilize the Paint Brush on the MicroSoft to create a picture illustrating
their poem.
Modifications: Work
with partners and allow more time for special needs students.
