From Myth to Science Fiction / Fantasy
Lesson 2:  Mission Mars

Learner Outcomes:
  Students will comprehend and analyze a science fiction story with a futuristic setting on Mars.  Students will learn facts about Mars.  Students will be able to compose a comparison/contrast essay comparing the actual Mars with Bradbury's Mars. Students will be able to create an illustration relating to a story.

Duration of Lesson:
   10 days

Materials:
  Textbook or short story anthology with Ray Bradbury's "The Naming of Names"
   Computer with Internet access and Microsoft Office

Technology Tools:
  Computer with Internet access and Microsoft Office

Teacher Notes:
  A signed Acceptable Use policy should be on file.

Procedures:
  1. Instruct students to read and discuss Ray Bradbury's short story, "The Naming of Names".
  2. For the art component of the lesson, instruct students to choose one section of the story to illustrate.
       a. Discuss how illustrations can enhance a reader's concept of a story. Show examples of
           illustrations from other books.
       b. Review composition as it relates to visual art and the elements of art and the principles of design.
       c. Choose a section of the story "The Naming of Names" to illustrate.
       d. Give students the option of media for their work: tempera paints, watercolors, Prisma color pencils
           or pen and ink.
       f. Display the students work sequentially to the story line.
  3. For the science component of the lesson, instruct students to research the actual Mars, using the Internet. (M.L.A. guide for research and documentation)

   4. Show students the format for a comparison/contrast essay.
   5. Instruct students to write a comparison/contrast essay comparing Bradbury's Mars with the actual Mars.

Modifications:
   Modifications for students' I.E.P.'s may be made.

Enrichment Activities:
  Invite students to create a Martian village at the project site.
