Fairy Tales - Introduction

Learner Outcomes:
- Students will become
aware of the literature genre--fairy tale.
- Students will become
aware that fairy tales are part of the oral tradition
of literature.
- Students will use the
card catalog to locate fairy tale books.
- Students will read a
minimum of three fairy tale titles.
- Students will correctly
use capitalization and punctuation skills to
write a summary of each tale read.
- Students will be able
to locate the country of the three introduced
fairy tale
authors--Charles Perrault (France), Grimm Brothers
(Germany), and Hans Christian Andersen (Denmark).
- Students will be able
to name two of the three introduced authors of
fairy tales and name their country of origin.
- Students will use a
timeline to see the life span of each author and
how they do or do not overlap.
Duration of Lesson:
2-3 40 minute class periods
Materials:
Library
collection, card catalog, example of
card catalog entries (teaching carts, sample cards, or printout of
automated
entries), map of Europe, timeline for the years 1600-1925.

Microsoft Office Software, headphones)
Computer lab with Excel

Card Catalog teaching charts or example of card catalog entries

Have some fairy tales available for reading during free time
Procedures:
-
Students will view Fairy Tale Power Point
presentation.
-
Students will use the Computer Lab (Microsoft Excel) to make a timeline
for the life span of the four ( list Grimm Brothers separately) fairy
tale authors presented in the Power Point presentation for the years
1600
to 1925--25 year intervals.

Using the prepared timeline, the students will color
in the life span of each of the above listed authors. A handout can
be given to the students listing the needed information or the Power
Point
presentation can be reviewed with students taking notes or completing
timeline
as presentation is reviewed. Students could also show dates from Power
Point presentation of when various fairy tales books were published.

Given a map of Europe, students will use a
classroom
displayed map of Europe to locate the countries of France (Perrault),
Germany
(Grimm Brothers), and Denmark (Andersen) and color them as directed
by
the map key.

Using card catalog teaching charts (or other examples of catalog
entries),
teacher will review author, subject, and title cards.

Discuss "words" to be used in searching in card catalog for fairy tale
titles:
author--Perrault, Grimm, and Andersen; subject--FAIRY TALES; FOLKLORE;
and title--first word of title unless title begins with word "a", "an",
or "the", then go to second word.

Using card catalog teaching charts, teacher will review location of
call
number and how to use it to locate books in the library.

Teacher will use projection system to review how to use an automated
card
catalog--same rules as above for searching in card catalog.

Students will use the school's card catalog (automated where available)
and the Internet to access the library collection of local public
libraries.

Students will be asked to read at least three fairy tales and complete
a worksheet listing title, author, and write a brief summary including
story setting, characters, and plot. Students will be reminded to use
complete
sentences and correctly use capitalization and punctuation skills.

Students will complete a quiz which covers some
of the points of this lesson.
Modifications:

Teacher will give help as needed.

Pair students so that they may help to teach needed skills.

Copy of timeline can be provided or an abbreviated timeline can be
loaded
on the computer allowing the student to finish and/or complete.

Number of fairy tales to be read and completion of related worksheet
may
be adjusted.

Enrichment Activities:
Students may use
the library computer to
access approved (bookmarked) related websites which will give
information
on the fairy tales and their authors. Students may use the computer to
prepare a chart or graph of the authors' lifespans in addition to the
timeline.
