Hansel and Gretel


Grade Level: 3

Learner Outcomes:

  1. The students will sing a German Folk Dance.
  2. The students will demonstrate a German Folk Song.
  3. The students will learn desirable social skills and attitudes when dancing with a partner.
  4. The students will demonstrate rhythmical and expressive movement.
Duration of Lesson: 2, 40 minute class periods

Materials:  CD Player, CD "Hansel and Gretel," Lyrics to "Hansel and Gretel"

Technology Tools/Courseware:  CD Player, Video Recorder

Teacher Notes:

Procedures:
Day 1
  1. Give the background of the music.
  2. Give the lyrics of "Hansel and Gretel" to students.
  3. Students will do a choral reading to the song "Hansel and Gretel".
  4. Listen to the music.
  5. Teach the words without music.
  6. Teach the words with music.

Day 2

  1. Give the background of the dance.
  2. Listen to the music to get an idea of character, quality, and speed.
  3. Describe and demonstrate the dance.
  4. Teach the steps.
  5. Do the steps individually without music, then add music.
  6. Partner the students.
  7. Use partners without music, then add music.
Modification: Enrichment Activities: Make up a song and dance for the Fairy Tale they created in Language Arts.
