Lesson 4:  Flag Etiquette

Session 1

  1. Explain to students that they will be learning the different rules that apply to the American Flag.
  2. Have students explore the bookmarked websites about the US Flag Code.
  3. Have students pick the 5 rules they think are the most important or most interesting and write them down.
  4. Keep the written rules to use during the next two sessions.
Session 2
  1. Students will review rules that they found during Session 1.
  2. Students and teacher will create a class bar graph noting the chosen rules and how many students chose those rules.
  3. Discuss the results of the graph.
Session 3
  1. Tell the students that they going to make a book of flag rules.
  2. Have students copy each of their rules on a separate sheet of drawing paper.
  3. Students will then draw and color a picture to illustrate each rule.
  4. Students will make a cover for their books and bind the pages together.
