Subjects: Math, Social Studies and Language Arts

Learner Outcomes: Students will be able to:

• use standard cooking measurements.
• follow a written recipe.
• create a replica of the American flag.

Duration of Lesson: Three sessions within the same day.

• measuring , mixing, baking- 60 minutes
• decorating and eating - 45 minutes
• sequencing and narration- 45 minutes

Materials:

• printed copies of recipe
• ingredients for cake  (see recipe)
• ingredients to decorate the cake - strawberries, blueberries, whipped cream
• measuring cups, and spoons
• baking pan
• whisk
• mixing bowl
• poster board or chart paper
• markers

Technology Tools:

• digital camera
• multimedia computer
• color printer

Teacher Notes:

• Send home note in advance requesting donations of recipe items.
• Check for student allergies to any of the ingredients.
• Check with the cook staff on using school oven.
• Sessions 1 and 2 should be planned for same day with time between for baking and cooling of cake.
• Put students in teams of five to prepare cakes.
• Make sure to have enough materials for all teams to prepare the cake.
• Have materials and supplies ready for students.
• Teacher will need to print digital pictures between sessions 2 and 3.
• Volunteers to help may be desired.

Procedures:

Session 1

1. Discuss the recipe with class as a whole group.
2. Demonstrate how to measure using the standard units of measurement.
3. Give each group a copy of the recipe along with ingredients.
4. Have students follow written recipe to make cake.
5. While students are making cake batter, the teacher will use a digital camera to document each ingredient and step.
6. Take cakes to the kitchen to be baked.

Session 2

1. Review the design of the flag.
2. Use topping ingredients to create the flag design on each cake.
3. Take pictures of completed cakes and then let students eat.

Session 3

1. Have students put pictures in sequential order .
2. Write narrative by each picture to create recipe poster.

Modifications:

• Since this activity is done as group work special needs students should be able to follow along.
• In the case of food allergies, a student can help measure certain items and, or take pictures for the poster.

Evaluation / Assessment: Assessment will be done by teacher observation as students measure and design.
