Title:    You CAN Have Your Flag and Eat It Too!

Grade Level:    3

Procedures:

Session 1

  1. Discuss the recipe with class as a whole group.
  2. Demonstrate how to measure using the standard units of measurement.
  3. Give each group a copy of the recipe along with ingredients.
  4. Have students follow written recipe to make cake.
  5. While students are making cake batter, the teacher will use a digital camera to document each ingredient and step.
  6. Take cakes to the kitchen to be baked.


Session 2

  1. Review the design of the flag.
  2. Use topping ingredients to create the flag design on each cake.
  3. Take pictures of completed cakes and then let students eat.


Session 3

  1. Have students put pictures in sequential order .
  2. Write narrative by each picture to create recipe poster.

Modifications:

Enrichment Activities: Have students collect various "patriotic" recipes to create a class cookbook.

Evaluation / Assessment: Assessment will be done by teacher observation as students measure and design.
