Title: Bell Shape Curve

Grade Level(S):  10-12

Learner Outcomes:

  1. Gain knowledge of measures of central tendency and standard deviations.
  2. Basic relationship of how measures of central tendency and standard deviation are used in psychology.
  3. Gain the knowledge of interpreting data of various methods.
  4. Create circle graphs, and frequency curves.
  5. Interpret and calculate range and standard deviation from data created through experimentation.

Duration of Lesson: Four -50 minute classes

Materials:

  1. Pretest ( Measuring your knowledge of psychology)
  2. Homework ( Standard deviation)
  3. Computer
  4. Power Point presentation
  5. Answer key
  6. Microsoft Word
  7. Excel
  8. Inspiration CD ROM

Teacher Notes:

  1. Computer contact signed.
  2. Confidentiality  consent form.

Procedures:

Day 1

  1. Student take Pre-test.
    1. Grade tests and have all scores written on board. Have students copy all scores on their own paper.
    2. Find Mean, Median and mode of their class scores.
  2. Give Formula for Standard Deviation.
    1. Students copy formula.
    2. Using the classes score find the standard deviation of this class.
      1. Use formula to find mean and deviation.
      2. Plot scores on bell sharp curve.

Day 2 and Day 3 and Day 4

  1. Students go to computer lab.
    1. Give students list of URL sites for Bell Shape Curve (Example of URL site, Bell Shape Curve)
      1. Give students site list MSN and type in Bell shaped curve
    2. Assign PowerPoint presentation on Bell Shape Curve ( Six Slides)
  2. Assign homework sheet. Homework Standard Deviation

Modifications:

  1. Modifications will be made based on those listed in students IEP.
  2. Oral as well as written presentation.
