Time Frame: One-two class
periods. (45 minutes each)

Procedures:

Use Excel
to create a 6 column FoodDiary to keep track of
diet for 3 days, beginning today.
-
Column headings: Food, Servings, Food Group, Calories, Fat
Grams, and Carbohydrates.
-
Show students how to check for these items on food labels.
-
Give out a variety of food labels, which do not name the
food from which it comes.
-
Have students find the above items and then determine whether
or not this is a healthy food.
-
Then have them guess the food from which the label was taken.

In The House web site for more practice in reading food labels.
Modifications:

Depending on disability and IEP, adjust the Food Diary assignment.

Use peer tutoring in creating Excel document and cooperative
grouping in food label activity.
