Learner Outcomes:

Students will evaluate the school lunch menu for the day
and place each food into the proper category of the Food Guide Pyramid.

Students will then create an alternate menu that covers all
food groups and contains a variety of nutrients.
Time Frame: One class
period. (45 minutes)
Materials: school
lunch menu for the day
Technology Tools/Courseware:
Teacher Notes: Obtain
copies of lunch menu for each student.
Procedures:
-
Using the school lunch menu for the day, categorize each
food to be served, into the Food Guide Pyramid to determine if the meal
is well balanced and contains servings from each of the food groups.

They will then create an alternate menu with foods of their
choice.
-
The alternate menu must be well balanced and contain servings
from all food groups and a variety of nutrients.

Use Creative
Writer or Word
to create the Food Guide Pyramids containing the foods from the menus.
Modifications: Depending
on disability and IEP, use peer tutoring and cooperative grouping.
Enrichment Activities:
-
Create a Power
Point presentation comparing/contrasting the school lunch menu
to the students' menus.

May present to parents and/or PTO.
Evaluation/Assessment:

By observation and class participation.

Evaluation of school menu analysis and creation of their
own menus.
