Can You Play "Resume?"

Grade Level(s):        9 - 12

Subject(s):             Business Computer Literacy; Physical Education; Reading and Language Arts

Learner Outcomes:

1)  Students will do internet research on popular sports figures.
2)  Students will select a favorite sports figure and gather specific information about that athlete based on
     assigned criteria.
3)  Students will create a resume for their athlete based on the informational facts they collected.
4)  Students will use the resume wizard found in Microsoft Word 2000 to prepare a resume for their athlete.
Duration of Lesson: 

Two 90-minute class periods

Materials:

Technology Tools/Courseware:
Microsoft Word 2000
Projection Device
Computer for each student
Internet Access
Printer

Teacher Notes:
Teacher should have a working knowledge of the resume wizard in Microsoft Word. 
Secure computer laboratory access if necessary.
All students should have signed the county/school Acceptable Use Policy.
Teacher should closely monitor the Internet use during the fact finding assignment.

Procedures:
1)  Introduce the objectives of this lesson to the students.
2)  Review research strategies using the internet.  Prior knowledge of internet search strategies is a prerequisite for 
      this lesson.
3)  After asking for student input, compile a list of favorite search engines and list them on a chalkboard or whiteboard.
4)  Have students select a sports personality from the provided list.  Each student must select a unique personality.
5)  Pass out the interview sheet that students must complete prior to creating the resume.
6)  Using a projection device, do a demonstration lesson on how to use the resume wizard.
7)  Follow the instruction sheet on which choices to make when creating the resume.
8)  Complete the resume template using the facts found on the internet.
9)  Print a hardcopy of the resume.

Modifications: 

Possible special education modifications include the following: 

For physically impaired students: 

   If available, use a touch screen. 
     Use a trackball or IntelliMouse.
     Using blocks,  raise the height of the computer table for wheelchair bound students.

For mentally impaired students: 

   Allow for additional time to complete the assignment when necessary. 
     Pair students with a partner if needed.

For visually impaired students: 

    Increase the size of the font.

*Consult with Special Education Department regarding specific IEP requirements.

Enrichment Activities:

  • Students may select more than one athlete to research.
  • Students may create their own original resume template if they choose.
  • Students can explore more about Microsoft Word  using web-based tutorials:   Microsoft Word Tutorial 

  • and Microsoft Word Knowdule.
Evaluation/Assessment:

Students will receive two grades for this lesson:
