2. Go over the handout that explains the assignment.Students will act as a reporter for a newspaper. They will be writing the feature story for the February edition celebrating Black History Month. They will select an approved, prominent African American to research and write a story. They will use Microsoft Publisher to create a newsletter based upon their approved person for the story. 3. Go over the steps for capturing a picture from the Internet. Refer to handout:Celebrate Black History Month handout 4. Using a projection device, walk through step-by-step with students the necessary steps to creating a newsletter in Microsoft Publisher. Refer to the handouts:Capturing a picture from the Internet 5. Once you have walked through the steps to creating a newsletter, continue by walking students through the Newsletter tutorial found under Help-->Microsoft Publisher Tutorials for 97 and found under Help-->Introduction to Publisher in 2000.Instructions for creating a newsletter in Micrsoft Publisher 97 handout 6. Students may work at their computers simultaneously with the teacher while completing steps four and five. However, I suggest when it is time for students to create their own newsletters, you have them start from the beginning using the handout as a guide. 7. Encourage students to be as creative as possible. Circulate continually around the room to answer student questions and to monitor student Internet usage. 8. A newsletter made in advance to show as an example to students will be helpful. 9. Links to some helpful Internet sites are listed under references for your convenience. Modifications: Possible special education modifications include the following: For physically impaired students: If available, use a touch screen.For mentally impaired students: Have bookmarks/favorites set to direct students to appropriate web sites.For visually impaired students: Provide large-print handouts.*Consult with Special Education Department regarding specific IEP requirements. Enrichment Activities: Students can present their newsletter to
the class.
