IT HELPS TO BE SURE, CREATE A COLLEGE BROCHURE

Grade Level(s):      11 and 12

Subjects:              English Language Arts, Business Computer Literacy

Learner Outcomes:

1)  Students will use the Internet to conduct research.
2)  Students will learn to create a brochure using Microsoft Publisher.
3)  Students will use appropriate software to practice and master desktop publishing incorporating text, graphics, and various fonts.
4)  Students will develop their writing skills by using appropriate software to practice and master the five-step writing process.

Duration of Lesson: 

    Two 90-minute class periods

Materials:

Instructions for creating a brochure in Microsoft Publisher 97 handout (or)
Instructions for creating a brochure in Microsoft Publisher 2000 handout

Instructions for Capturing an Image from the Internet
Rubric Grading Sheet

Technology Tools/Courseware:

Microsoft Publisher Software Version 97 or 2000
Projection Device
Computer for each student
Internet Access
Printer (Color printer is preferable)

Teacher Notes:
Teacher should have working knowledge of creating brochures in Microsoft Publisher prior to instructing lesson.  The handouts for 97 and 2000 will guide you through the process.
Secure computer laboratory access if necessary.
All students will be using the Internet to research chosen topics--Teacher should monitor students' Internet usage closely.

Procedures:

1)  Give an introduction of lesson to students:
Students will be conducting a college search for a college of their choice and creating an informational brochure for that college.  State to students the importance of exploring all of their options while making the decision of which college to attend.  Encourage students to choose a college that they are considering attending.
2) Go over the handout that explains the assignment.

3) Go over the steps for capturing a picture from the Internet. Refer to handout:
Instructions for Capturing an Image from the Internet
4) Using a projection device, walk students through the necessary steps to creating a brochure in Microsoft Publisher.  Refer to the handouts:

5) Once you have walked through the steps to creating a brochure, continue by walking students through the Brochure tutorial found under Help? Microsoft Publisher Tutorials for 97 and found under Help-->Introduction to Publisher for 2000.
6) Students may work at their computers simultaneously with the teacher while completing steps four and five.  However, I suggest when it is time for students to create their own brochures, you have them start from the beginning using the handouts as a guide.
7) Encourage students to be as creative as possible.  Circulate continually around the room to answer student questions and to monitor student Internet usage.
8) A brochure made in advance will be helpful to students.

Modifications:

Possible special education modifications include the following:

For physically impaired students:

If available, use a touch screen.
Use a trackball or IntelliMouse.
If typing is difficult, allow students to copy and paste information from the Internet into the newsletter.
For mentally impaired students:
Have bookmarks/favorites set to direct students to appropriate web sites
Reduce the length of newsletter
Allow for additional time when necessary
Place students in cooperative learning groups as necessary
For visually impaired students:
Provide large print handouts
Increase the zoom in Publisher
*Consult with Special Education Department regarding specific IEP requirements.

Enrichment Activities:

Students could present their findings on the college of their choice to the class.
Students could choose a second college to research.

Evaluation/Assessment:

Students will receive a grade based upon a rubric.
