A Wrinkle in Time 2

Lesson 2:
Dimensions

Grade Level: 6

Subjects: Math, Language Arts

Learner Outcomes:

  1. Students will recognize and explain dimensions in mathematical terms.
  2. Students will illustrate verbally and artistically all five dimensions.
  3. Students will read and discuss tesseract and the reality and scientific aspects.

Duration of Lesson:

Approximately one 45 minute class period, or elaborate into a block period for more enrichment.

Materials:

  1. Five (5) Sheets of paper per student
  2. Book: A Wrinkle In Time
  3. Color Pencils, opt

Technology Tools:

Teacher may use an overhead projector, or the Internet to provide research information for students.

Teacher Notes:

Students will want a definite answer for fourth and fifth dimensions, be prepared to answer questions or to encourage researching theories.

Procedures:

Introduction (15 minutes)

  1. Teacher will assign each student to read chapter 4, on tesseracts.
  2. Students will  whanalyzeat they think a tesseract is, and how to describe one.
  3. Teacher will pass out 5 sheets of white paper to each student.

Body (15 minutes)

  1. Students will describe one-dimensional in a paragraph and then create something one-dimensional. This would be a line, and the descriptions will vary.
  2. Students will then need to create an object in second-dimension. Objects will vary along with descriptions, but a good example is a flat square. Explain to students why a human could not live on a two dimensional planet, because lungs could not expand and blood could not flow through flat surfaces.
  3. Then students will create an object in third-dimension. They will draw it and explain third dimension, example being a cube.
  4. Students will finally try to explain 4th and 5th dimension. Allow for creativity and accept all that try.

Conclusion (15 minutes)

  1. Teacher will explain finally that we cannot draw it or really explain it because we ultimately do not really know ourselves the truth to tesseracts.
  2. Teacher will collect papers for a grade on completion and creativity.

Modifications:

  1. Students may complete this activity with partners.
  2. Students may illustrate with minimal writing to explain.

Enrichment Activities:

  1. Students may complete mini-research projects on time travel or Einstein.
  2. Students may create 3-diminsional projects.
  3. Students may extend learning to measure for volume, mass, and congruent examples.

Evaluation/Assessment: Students will be graded on participation.
