Duration of Lesson: 90 minutes
Materials: City maps, calculators, stopwatches, scavenger hunt items (rulers, string, markers, tags, pencils)
Technology Tools/Courseware: Calculators, stopwatches, overhead projector
Teacher Notes:
1. Give students information about scavenger hunts.Modifications: Students will be paired in cooperative learning groups.a. Find each item and return it to desk; time each trip; record total time.2. Compare the times and reach the conclusion that it is more economical to make one trip than five.
b. Collect all five items before returning to desk; record total time.
3. Discuss relationship between increased time and increased fuel need and the cost of increased fuel.
4. Instruct students how to read city maps, understand legend, and find a city by using coordinates.
5. Give each student a city map and four destinations. Students will record distance from school to destinations and back.
