Title:  Lesson 2:  Reading Regional Maps

Materials:    Maps, rulers, calculators

Technology Tools/Courseware:    Computers, calculators, overhead projector, Microsoft Excel and Paint

Teacher Notes:

Procedures:
1.    Give students instruction on how to use the map scale (measuring with a ruler) have students do examples with two give points.
2.    Instruct students on how to use the mileage chart which lists cities.  Do one example together.
3.    Explain the relationship of the colored numbers on a map which indicate distances between points marked with like colored symbols, and black numbers which indicate distance between major intersections.  Add the numbers to determine the distance between two locations.
4.    Using Excel, create a spreadsheet to show the differences and similarities between the methods used to estimate the distances.
Modifications: Enrichment Activities: Evaluation/Assessment:    Successful completion of the spreadsheet with points awarded for correct answers
