Title:    Lesson 4:  Standard to Metric Conversions for out of Country Travel

Learner Outcomes:    Students will be able to convert from kilometers to miles in real life situations.

Duration of Lesson:    45 minutes

Materials:    calculators, maps, and rulers

Technology Tools/Courseware:    Internet and MapQuest

Teacher Notes:

Procedures:
1.    Give students background information on standard metric conversion.
2.    Do example problems.
3.    Have students do a few examples to check understanding.
4.    Have students use maps and ruler to determine distance to four specified destinations and convert to metric units.
5.    Use MapQuest to compute distances to five locations in Canada and convert metric measure into standard measure.


Modifications:    Students should be paired in cooperative learning groups.

Enrichment Activities:    Students will determine amount of time needed for the trips given the rate of speed.

Evaluation/Assessment:    Successful completion of the lab.  Collect papers for map activity and award points for correct answers.
