A lesson in pig poetry and the mixing of colors!


 


Grade Level:  K-1

Subjects:  Language Arts, Art

Learner Outcomes:
    The student will explore the primary and secondary colors.
    The student will recognize the color words.
    The student will recognize the sight words.
    The student will recognize the rhyming words.
    The student will understand the concept words.
    The student will illustrate a poem.

Time Frame:  30 minutes

Materials:
  Copies of the poem, Genetics by Lloyd Robb - one per student
  Crayons
  Blue and yellow food coloring
  One plastic clear empty cup per two students
  Two plastic additional clear cups per table of children. One cup will contain blue water and one cup will contain yellow water. Word cards for the words: blue, yellow, green, I, a, in, the, be, and, above, below, Sue, Lou, sty, sky, seen, and green.

Technology Tools/Courseware:
    Internet ready computer
    Print Artist or Make A Flash  software
    Word processor
    Digital camera

Teacher Notes:
          This lesson is for a one computer classroom.
    Before the lesson, copy the poem onto chart paper.
    Make word cards using Print Artist or Make A Flash
        software.

Procedures:
    1.  Choose two children to assist pouring the water. One child will pour a small amount of blue water into the empty cup.  The second child will pour a small amount of yellow water into the same cup. Discuss what happened to the water.
    2.  Read the poem on the chart paper aloud to the class.  Introduce the word cards and read them together.  Have the children match the word card  to the word in the poem on chart paper.  Identify the rhyming words in the poem and match the rhyming word cards.
    3.  Reread the poem and discuss the colors of Sue and Lou and the possible colors of the piglets (i.e. the colored water experiment).
    4.  Pass out the student copies of the poem.  Let students illustrate.  Use the digital camera to record some of the illustrations.

Modifications:
    Theteacher and/or kindergarten aide will encourage all students to participate. Students that require assistance will be helped to ensure completion of the lesson.
