The Higgy-Piggy
              Lesson 2 
 A lesson in song and dance!
Grade Levels:  K-1

Subjects:   Music, Dance, Math, Science

Learner Outcomes:
    The student will demonstrate the spatial concepts of left and right.
    The student will sing a song from memory with a steady tempo singing high and low pitches.
    The student will compare the vocabulary of human body parts to pig body parts.

Time Frame: 30 minutes

Materials:
Song sheet to The Higgy-Piggy (Hokey Pokey)
Large drawing of a pig with body parts labeled -- hoof, hammock, snout, tail
Word cards with human body parts -- hand, leg, nose, bottom

Technology Tools/Courseware:
    Internet-ready computer
    Projector TV
    Digital video camera

Teacher Notes:
    This lesson is for a one-computer classroom. Open space is needed for this movement activity.  If your room is small, use a large open space such as the gym, cafeteria, stage, or playground.

Procedures:
    1.  Introduce the pig body parts on the pig drawing. Compare the pig body parts to the human body parts. Label with human body parts word cards.
    2.  Review or introduce the song "The Hokey Pokey."  Review left and right.  Tell students you will be changing the words to the song, substituting human body parts for pig body parts.
    3.  Form a large circle and drop hands. Make sure each student has his/her own personal space.
    4.  Sing The Higgy-Piggy  while encouraging left and right movements.
    5.  Use the digital video camera to record the dancing.

Modifications:
    The teacher and/or kindergarten aide will encourage all students to participate.  Students that require assistance will be helped to ensure successful completion of the lesson.

Enrichment Activities:
  Play the game, "Pin the Tail on the Pig."  Make a tail from a pink pipe cleaner that has been curled around a pencil.
  Pass the Pig Game.
  Play Hot Pig (Hot Potato) using a stuffed toy pig.

Evaluation/Assessment:
    1.  Visually note students left and right movement or confusion.
    2.  Check for respect of personal space.
    3.  Give an oral quiz on pig body parts vs.human body parts.
    4.  Sing echo response with students checking pitch and tempo.
          5.  Record assessment on Student Checklist form.
