Lesson 3
A lesson in table manners!
Grade Levels:   K-1

Subjects:   Language Arts, Health

Learner Outcomes:
    The student will brainstorm good and bad table manners for the teacher to write on chart paper.
    The student will demonstrate appropriate listening behaviors during a story reading.
    The student will understand and relate character feelings.
    The student will demonstrate proper table etiquette.
    The student will remember specific details and interpret and extend meaning.

Time Frame:  Two 30-minute lessons

Materials:
  tablecloths ,plastic knife, fork, spoon, and a plastic plate for each student
  chart paper/markers
  book - The Proper Pig's Guide to Mealtime Manners

Technology Tools/Courseware:
    Internet-ready computer
    Digital camera
    Digital video camera
    Projector TV
    Microsoft Creative Writer software

Teacher Notes:
    This lesson is for a one-computer classroom. Teacher should bookmark the National Pork Producers Council about manners.

Procedures:
    1.  Title a piece of chart paper "Table Manners."  Divide into two columns labeled "Good" and "Bad."  Students will brainstorm good and bad table manners for the teacher to record on the chart.
    2.  Read the book The Proper Pig's Guide to Mealtime Manners.
    3.  Discuss the characters' feelings and the manners which they used in the book.
    4.  Set tables with tablecloths, plastic ware, and plastic plates.  Review proper table manners with mealtime props.

Modifications:
    The teacher and/or kindergarten aide will encourage all students to participate.  Students that require assistance will be helped to ensure successful completion of the lesson.

Enrichment activities:
    Create a class book.  Each student illustrates himself/herself as a pig exhibiting a good or bad table manner. The student then fills in the "talking bubble" writing the manner within it.
    The students can write an invitation to lunch on Microsoft Creative Writer.  To extend the activity further, invite the principal or superintendent to lunch to show off their table manners.
    Make a place mat for a real meal or a practice meal.
    Students set and decorate a table for a practice dinner.

Evaluation/Assessment:
 1.  Refer to the Table Manners/Good and Bad chart created by the class.  Add any more manners that the students have learned since the beginning of the lesson.
 2.  Enjoy a casual lunch with the principal and visually note the changes in the students manners.
 3.  Record assessment on Student Checklist form.
