Cute Pig Cookies
Lesson 4


A lesson in math that is good enough to eat!


 


Grade Levels: K-1

Subjects: Math, Language Arts

Learner Outcomes:
    Student will read a lesson plan and follow directions.
    Student will measure ingredients.
    Students will enjoy pig literature while cookies are baking.

Time Frame: 1 hour and 15 minutes maximum completion time.

Materials:
  Books to read
  Chart paper
  Toaster oven (see teacher's notes)
  Cooking Tools: spatula, two bowls, measuring cups, spoons, and cooling rack
  Recipe Ingredients (in Reference section)
  Decorating Tools: toothpicks, plastic knives, wax paper, and one small paper plate per student

Technology Tools/Courseware:
    Internet-ready computer
    Digital Camera
    Scanner

Teacher Notes:
    This lesson is for a one-computer classroom.
    If you have access to the school's kitchen baking time will be shorter than using a toaster oven in the classroom.
    Have each child write their name on the outer edge of the paper plate and decorate their cookie on the plate.
    Keep a pictorial diary of the day's activities with a digital camera.
    Send a student written e-mail letter to another classroom to share the activity.

Procedure:
  1.  Have digital camera ready to document the cookie activity.
  2.  On chart paper, write the cookie ingredients asking the children to spell words as the teacher writes ingredients.
  3.  Show the cooking utensils to be used and discuss the different sizes and their relationship to each other.
  4.  Teacher will ask individual students to help with cookie preparation in front of the entire class. See Cute Pig Cookies Recipe.
  5.  As the cookies bake, read pig literature to the class.
  6.  After cookies have cooled, students will frost and decorate their cookie on their plate.
  7. Enjoy!!!

Modification:  The teacher and/or kindergarten aide will encourage all students to participate.  Students that require assistance will be helped to ensure successful completion of the lesson.

1.  Student participation in measuring and mixing cookie batter
2.  Following directions for cookie decoration
3.  Appropriate behavior while listening to stories about pigs
4.  Record assessment on Student Checklist form
