Spoon Puppets
Lesson 5

A lesson in art with pigs and a wolf!


 


Grade Levels:  K-1

Subjects:  Language Arts, Art

Learner Outcomes:
    The student will create a spoon puppet for a dramatization.
   The student will use his/her imagination and small motor skills.

Time Frame:  Two 30-minute lessons

Materials:
  plastic spoons one per student
  googlie eyes
  small pompoms
  craft and fabric glue
  fabric/felt/fur scraps
  sharpie markers

Technology Tools/Courseware:
    Digital video camera
    Projector TV

Teacher Notes:
     This lesson is for a one-computer classroom. Conduct several readings of The Three Little Pigs.  There are several versions of the story.  Choose the version the class wishes to act out with puppets. Take pictures during the making of the spoon puppets.  Continue taking photos during the class dramatization of The Three Little Pigs.

Procedures:
    1. After several readings of The Three Little Pigs, create the characters as spoon puppets.
    2.  Distribute glue bottles and one spoon per student.
    3.  Students should be grouped in fours. One student will make a wolf puppet and the remaining three will make pig puppets.  Each student will receive two googlie eyes and one pompom to glue to the convex side of the spoon.  This will become the puppet's face.
    4.  Distribute materials for ears, mouths, and clothes (fur, felt, and fabric scraps).
    5.  Give the groups of four time to practice their version of The Three Little Pigs. Then let each group perform in front of the digital video camera to be played back on the projector TV.

Modifications:
    The teacher and/or kindergarten aide will encourage all students to participate.  Students that require assistance will be helped to ensure successful completion of the lesson.

Enrichment activities:
    Students can make three wolves and one pig to perform a reenactment of The Three Little Wolves and the Big Bad Pig.
    Students will make a stage and/or the houses for the reenactment.
    Make a Venn diagram comparing story versions.
    Read a condensed version of The Three Little Pigs from the Internet and answer the questions.

Evaluation/Assessment:
1.  Consider the craftsmanship and details of the puppets.
2.  Consider how well the groups cooperated and collaborated with each other during their puppet shows.
3.  Consider how close the students' stories were to the original. Were the students creative in their own version?
4.  Record assessment on Student Checklist form.
