Lesson 1: Primary Colors

Grade Level:  First, Second

Time Frame:  Two to three 40 minute periods

Computer with Internet access

Teacher Notes:
Color wheel in procedure #4 is labeled only.  Teacher may wish to prepare a colored example in advance.

Procedures:
1. Read and discuss the book, Yellow Yellow by Frank Asch.
2. Introduce yellow as a primary color and guide students to identify that red and blue are also
    primary colors.
3. Create class stories on chart paper adapted from Yellow Yellow substituting red and blue objects.
    (Ex. I found a red glove. I found a blue shirt.)
4. Display copy of color wheel for discussion.
5. Divide students into groups of four or five. Give each group a container of red, yellow, and
    blue manipulatives to sort, count, and graph.  Use Excel attachment #1a.  (View in print preview.)
6. Make red, yellow, & blue origami hats to reinforce memorization of primary colors.

Modifications:
Teachers should determine specific needs of students as indicated on Individualized Educational Plan.

Enrichment Activities:
Use color paddles to illustrate primary colors.
Read other stories that use primary colors as a theme.  (Ex. The Little Red Hen, Little Red Riding Hood)
Students could create stories using software such as Creative Writer or Children's Writing & Publishing.
