Lesson 5: Rainbows

Grade Level:First, Second

Learner Outcomes:
The students will identify the order of the colors of the rainbow.

Time Frame: Two to three 40 minute periods.

Materials:

Technology Tools/Courseware:
Computer with Internet access
Media Projector/Scan Converter (if available)

Teacher Notes:
Small gingerbread boy, attachment #5a, can be enlarged to life-size gingerbread boy.

Procedures:
1.  Instruct the students to draw and color a rainbow.
2.  Introduce Roy G. Biv, the life-size rainbow colored gingerbread boy.
3.  Explain that Roy G. Biv will help them remember the correct order of the colors of the rainbow -
     Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo, Violet
4.  Explain that rainbow colors are always in this order.
5.  Have the children color or paint the small gingerbread boy in the appropriate colors.
6.  Go to Internet sites and read more about rainbows.
7.  View Power Point Presentation.
8.  Go outside and blow bubbles and watch the rainbows form inside the bubbles.
9.  Go to Internet site and follow directions to make rainbows with a compact disc.
10. Go to Internet site and sing along with the lyrics to Rainbow Connection.

Modifications:
Teachers should determine specific needs of students as indicated on Individualized Educational Plan.
