Lesson 5: Rainbows

Grade Level:First, Second

Subjects:  Language Arts, Science, Art, Music, Computer/Technology

Learner Outcomes:
The students will identify the order of the colors of the rainbow.

Time Frame: Two to three 40 minute periods.

Materials:

• Life-size rainbow colored gingerbread boy for display
• Small gingerbread boy for students to color or paint - attachment #5a
• Construction paper
• Crayons/markers/paints
• Bubbles - see attachment #5b for recipe
• Rainbow worksheet - attachment #5c
• Any compact disc (CD)
• Sunshine or bright flashlight
• White paper

Teacher Notes:
Small gingerbread boy, attachment #5a, can be enlarged to life-size gingerbread boy.

Procedures:
1.  Instruct the students to draw and color a rainbow.
2.  Introduce Roy G. Biv, the life-size rainbow colored gingerbread boy.
3.  Explain that Roy G. Biv will help them remember the correct order of the colors of the rainbow -
     Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo, Violet
4.  Explain that rainbow colors are always in this order.
5.  Have the children color or paint the small gingerbread boy in the appropriate colors.
6.  Go to Internet sites and read more about rainbows.
7.  View Power Point Presentation.
8.  Go outside and blow bubbles and watch the rainbows form inside the bubbles.
9.  Go to Internet site and follow directions to make rainbows with a compact disc.
10. Go to Internet site and sing along with the lyrics to Rainbow Connection.

Modifications:
Teachers should determine specific needs of students as indicated on Individualized Educational Plan.

• "Jump Start First Grade" Software by Knowledge Learning for interactive story of Roy G. Biv
• Read poems and books about rainbows
• Write a story about Roy G. Biv using Creative Writer or Children's Writing & Publishing
• Graph students' favorite colors using Excel
