Learner Outcomes
Students will use the internet to research heroes.
Students will use information found on the internet to list heroes.
Students will conduct a survey throughout the school to compile data into a bar graph titled "Top 10 Heroes".
Students will learn that heroes are found in all aspects of life, and that not all heroes are famous.

Duration of Lesson:  5 - 30 Minute Lessons

Materials
Pencils, colored pencils, paper, calculators, bar graph worksheet.

Technology Tools/Courseware:
Yahooligans search engine, CompassLearning Student Writing Center
Computers with internet access, printer

Teacher Notes:
Contact computer lab teacher to schedule dates for internet research.
Notify parent volunteers to assist in computer lab.
Make sure internet use permission forms are signed and filed in the computer lab.
Pair emergent readers with parent volunteers to surf the internet for research on heroes.
Set date for survey to be distributed to classrooms.

Procedures
Day 1
1.   Classroom discussion of heroes.
2.  Teacher will assign a hero to each student to research on the internet.
Days 2 and 3
3.  Students will use the computer lab for researching assigned hero.
4.  Students will print information found on the internet about his/her assigned hero.
Day 4
5.  Students will compile a class list of heroes.
6.  Students will create on Microsoft Office Version 2000 a class made survey  entitled  "Who is Your Hero?", which will be distributed it  to the entire school.
Day 5
7.  Students will collect surveys and use data from survey to compile a bar graph of "Top 10 Heroes".

Modifications
All students will have access to computers for internet research.
Emergent readers will have assistance from parent volunteers.
Teacher will refer to needed IEP's and/or 504 plans for lesson modifications.

Enrichment Activities
Invite a local veteran to the school to discuss heroes of his/her era.
Field trip to various local historic sites, (e.g., battlefields, courthouses, veteran's memorial parks, museums).

Evaluation:
Student recall of information found in internet research.
Completion of bar graph titled "Top 10 Heroes".
