Grade Level: 2 and 3

Subject:  Mathematics

Learner Outcomes:
Students will practice writing and solving 2 digit addition problems, with and without regrouping.
Students will practice writing and solving 3 digit addition problems, with and without regrouping.
Students will practice writing sentences by working with a partner.

Duration of Lesson: 1 - 45 minute lesson

Materials:
paper, pencil, chalkboard or chart paper, calculators

Technology Tools/Courseware:
Computers, CompassLearning Math Grade 2,  Unit 2 addition lessons
CompassLearning Student Writing Center or Microsoft Office Version 2000
Performance Math CD Grade 3, addition lessons

Teacher Notes:
To save time, write alphabet values on the chalkboard or chart paper before beginning the lesson.
Pair or group students in advance.
Parent volunteers may be utilized when the children are writing sentences.
Students will be assigned to CompassLearning Math units in advance.
Make sure technology use policy forms are signed and on file for each student.

Procedures:
1. The teacher will assign each letter of the alphabet a numerical value, such as A=1.
2. The teacher will instruct students to write their first name, then write the value of each letter.
3. Students will find the sum of their first name by adding the letter values.
4. The teacher will ask students to tell their sums--who has the largest sum? smallest sum?
5. Continue the lesson by having the students write and add the values for heroic qualities; such brave, generous, helpful, bold, etc.  Ask the students to identify which word has the greatest/least value.
6. Students may also write addition sentences using 2 letters or words, such as:
B+V=___   or      BOLD+BRAVE=____  and give to their partner to solve.

Modifications:
Students may be paired according to abilities, with students having difficulty in addition working with a student of better ability (peer tutoring).
Letter values may be written with dollar and cent signs to give students practice in adding money.
Teacher will review student IEP's and 504 plans for modifications needed.

Enrichment Activities:
Divide the class into pairs or small groups.  Ask each group to write a sentence.  Using the same numerical values, ask each group to find the value of their sentence.  Students may also use these sentences to begin a story.
When students are finished they may share their sentences or stories with other groups.
Students may be given time to type their sentences/stories on CompassLearning Student Writing Center or Microsoft Word.  Parent volunteers may help the students when typing.
Students may be asked to use "mental math" instead of paper and pencil with addition problems.

Evaluation/Assessment:
Students may use calculators to check their addition and the addition of their partners.
Students may be assigned to CompassLearning Math Grade 2, Unit 2, to be completed with a score of 70% and/or above.
Students may be assigned to complete a Performance Math session in addition.
