My Hero
 




Grade Level:  2 and 3

Subject: Language Arts/ Poetry

Learner Outcomes: 
Students will use a pattern to write a four line poem.
Students will use brainstorming techniques to generate a variety of words that describe qualities of a hero.
Students will review parts of speech and synonyms.

Duration of Lesson: 1 - 45 Minute Lesson and 1 - 30 Minute Lesson

Materials:
Writing and Art Go Hand in Hand by Diane Bonica
Paper, pencil, Language Spiral or Journal
Chart paper, poster board

Technology Tools/Courseware:
Computer, CompassLearning Student Writing Center, Microsoft Office Version 2000
Overhead Projector, transparency

Teacher Notes:
Coordinate with Lesson What Makes a Hero?  in H is for Hero Unit.
Talk to Art Teacher about making tissue paper/decorative frame for finished poem.
Prepare pattern poem form on poster board, chart paper, or overhead transparency.
Make sure technology use policy forms are signed and on file for each student.

Procedures:
Day One
 1.  Teacher will review parts of speech to be used in patterned poem. (noun, adjective, verb)
 2.  Teacher will explain the use of synonyms.
 3.  Teacher will display prepared pattern poem:
               line 1                                   Heroes                                    (noun)
               line 2                             brave, helpful                               (2 adjectives)
               line 3                           saving, protecting                            (2 "ing" verbs)
               line 4                                   Firemen                                  (synonym)
 4.  Students will complete a poem using the pattern.
Day Two
 5.  Students will type completed poem and add a picture from clipart or the Student Writing Center on the computer.

Modifications:
Allow emergent writers to dictate their poem to peer tutors, upper grade buddies, or aide.
Parent Volunteers will assist students in the computer lab with typing, editing, and printing.
Teacher will review student IEP's and 504 plans for modifications needed.

Enrichment Activities:
Display final poem with Art Designed Border of the student's choice.

Evaluation/Assessment:
Students will evaluate their own poems and decide if this poem should be included in the portfolio of their "best" writing.
