Learner Outcomes:
· Students will communicate effectively to develop a party name
and select a party nominee.
· Students will apply knowledge of visual arts by designing
a campaign logo.
· Students will use reasoning and logic skills to identify a
nominee.
Duration of Lesson: 45-60 minutes
Materials: Teacher-created voter registration form; pencils;
crayons/markers/colored pencils;
Art paper
Technology Tools/Courseware: multimedia computer with Internet connection and projection device; PowerPoint software.
Teacher Notes:
· Preassign students to two or three unnamed political parties.
· Have PowerPoint
presentation on qualifications for a United States president and a
class president prepared.
· Have copies of voter registration form.
· Have copies of Democratic
and Republican National Convention Logos
Procedures:
· Discuss the process of voter registration.
· Have students complete the teacher-created
voter registration form.
· Have students meet in their cooperative “party” groups to
choose a party name and
design a party logo.
· Present the PowerPoint on qualifications
of a US President.
· Have two party groups reconvene and select a nominee to represent
them in the class election.
Modifications:
· Have students with special learning needs (ex: Learning
disabled or mentally impaired students) work with a peer tutor
to complete the voter registration form.
· Have students with visual/hearing impairments seated close
to presentation area.
Enrichment Activities:
· Students may use ideas from the * Patriotic Symbols Activity
Book* to create campaign buttons, leaflets, posters, and party
booths.
· Students may go to the website georgewbush
to do a compare/contrast activity.
Evaluation/Assessment: Teacher-created rubric.
