Learner Outcomes:
· Students will identify past campaign issues/promises.
· Students will identify current campaign issues.
· Students will identify issues of importance within their
school environment.
Duration of Lesson: 45-60 minutes
Materials: newspapers, current events magazines, pencils, paper
Technology Tools/Courseware: multimedia computer with Internet connection and projection device; Microsoft Office 2000 software.
Teacher Notes:
· Have newspapers/current events magazines available for students
to highlight and/or clip. Some newspapers provide
complimentary copies for classroom use.
Procedures:
· Use computer with Internet and projection device to visit
the following sites for students to view famous campaign highlights.

· Review newsprint media for current campaign issues. Students
should highlight and/or clip out articles of significance. This
could be done as a partner activity with two students working
together.
· Brainstorm (gather ideas) issues affecting the school
setting, such as longer lunch periods. Have a student list them on
the
board. This is done as an entire group activity.
· Prioritize the issues affecting the school setting by show
of hands. Have a student put the prioritized list on the board.
This
is an entire group activity.
· Use Microsoft Office or other comparable software to
create a class graph of issue importance using the results of
the prioritized list. Teacher may also choose to draw
the graph by hand on large posterboard.
Modifications:
· Pair special needs students (ex: learning disabled and
mentally impaired students) with a peer tutor.
· Seat students with visual/hearing impairments close to projection
area.
Enrichment Activities:
· Ask students to bring in clippings of campaign issues (past
and/or present).
· Have students watch nightly newscasts for candidate ratings
in the polls.
Evaluation/Assessment: Participation in class viewing of campaign highlights, completion of group graph of issue importance.
