well as various other musical selections)
Technology Tools/Courseware:
-
computer with Internet access and CD player
-

Teacher Notes: If the classroom teacher does
not have an adequate music background, a suitable resource person with
musical ability should be found. This will be an enjoyable lesson for those
with musical ability, and addresses musical rhythm intelligence.
Procedures:
-
The Teacher will play various instrumental songs
from the CDs and ask that the students identify the musical selections.
When the Star Spangled Banner is played, discuss the concept of a 'national
anthem' with the students.
-
Ask students if they know how and when the Star
Spangled Banner was created. Students will complete Internet research (see
references) to find the events surrounding its creation, and share
this information in a classroom discussion.
-
Discuss changing styles of music with the students.
Discuss whether the sound, style, tempo, etc. of the Star Spangled Banner
'fits' with today's music.
-
Students discuss in small groups how they would
change the music to a more 'today' sound. Together the students, teacher
and resource person(s) create a new music version.
Modifications:
Lessons should be adjusted according
to the students IEP.
Enrichment Activities:
-
Assign each student a country. Students will
research that country's
national anthem and present findings to the class.
