Procedure:  Day 2 (43 minutes)
Show students the garden hose wrapped in red tape to represent a normal blood vessel.  Compare it to the plastic straw, which represents the blood vessel after it has been constricted by nicotine.  Which vessel can carry more blood and do its job better? (the bigger one)
Compare the feel of the soft, damp sponge, which represents normal lung tissue, to the dry hard sponge which represents how tar affects the lung tissue.
Blow up the intact balloon and let the air out to demonstrate how alveoli are suppose to work.  Try to blow up the balloon that has holes in it, representing a broken alveolus.
Demonstrate how people with lung cancer or emphysema feel.
Distribute the straws and coffee stirrers and direct students to jog in place for one to two minutes.
After jogging, have students breathe through the straws for just a few moments.
After another minute or so, ask students to try to breathe through the coffee stirrers.  (To modify this activity to simulate emphysema more realistic.  students inhale the normal way and exhale only through the straw or stirrer.
Teacher Alert:  Any child with respiratory problems should not participate in this activity.

Modifications:
Make special adjustments for students with special needs according to their IEP. Students with IEPs may require special seating, shortened assignments or materials read orally.
