Secondhand Isn't Grand

Learner Outcome:

Students will learn how secondhand smoke affects the nonsmoker.
Students will access information on the internet and read many facts about secondhand smoke.
Students will learn the difference between side stream smoke and mainstream smoke.
Students will learn how to use features on Microsoft Word to type and  print facts on Secondhand Smoke.

Duration:  Two Days (43 minute periods) 

Materials:

  The Tobacco Explorer CD
  Computer
  Microsoft Word
  Computer Projection Device
  Internet Access
  Printer

Teacher Notes:

The Tobacco Explorer CD is available through the WV Library Commission at
1-800-642-9021 ext. 8.
It can also be checked out at the Marion County Marion Health Department.
This CD may also be available at your state library or local health department.
Acceptable use policy signed for all participating students.

Procedure:  Day One (43 minutes)
View the Secondhand Smoke facts found on the Tobacco Explorer CD
           using the projection device in the computer lab.

    Have students choose one fact on Secondhand Smoke to type in Microsoft Word.

     Show how to use these features in Microsoft Word: bold and center on their text
            which will be used in tomorrow's assignment.

Procedure:  Day Two
On the projection device, display the following steps:
Have students open Microsoft Word.
Remind students to center their title and use bold print.
Type the title Secondhand Smoke Facts.
Type student name on second line and center.
Minimize this page and open the Internet
Have students view following internet sites provided on Secondhand Smoke

      What About Secondhand Smoke?
      Secondhand Smoke and Children
Have the students recall an interesting fact after viewing each site and type in Microsoft Word.
May need to review how to minimize and maximize internet and Microsoft Word screens on projection device.
Instruct students to print their facts. Must have at least four facts.

Modifications:
Make special adjustments for students with special needs according to their IEP.
Students may work in pairs, have shortened assignments or materials read orally.
May need to provide a direct link to the internet site.

Enrichment Activities:

  Invite a speaker from the health department to do a presentation on Secondhand Smoke.
  Provide Smoke Free Air pamphlets from the WV Library Commission.
  Order form is available by calling 1-800-642-9021 ext. 8.
  Orally read the different facts that students typed as a reteach lesson.

Evaluation/Assessment:
Students must turn in at least four typed facts about Secondhand Smoke.
